John Pollard

Counsellor

My work as an integrative counsellor is informed by theories and skills across several different orientations including humanistic, psychodynamic and cognitive. This means I can work flexibly and bring to our sessions a variety of ideas.

I’m committed to bringing attentive listening, compassion and empathy to all my client work. As well as addressing difficulties, I will help you identify your strengths and offer you different ways of viewing the issues you bring. All my work is guided and underpinned by my commitment to seeing you as a unique individual.

Therapy should be a collaborative process. While I encourage my clients to lead the way as much as possible (this is ‘your’ life), I am an active participant in our work together, bringing possibilities to explore as you move forwards.

The past, present and future are all important to your story and identity and we will explore together how you have come to be where you are, what is happening now, and where you are heading and what you want for your future.

From the start we will explore possible changes for you to try in your life outside therapy, but only things that make sense to you.

I have worked as a counsellor for over 30 years: the first 20 of these alongside other roles in mental health and well-being. I studied philosophy before therapy and am particularly interested in existentialism, an area I have taught and written about. This is both a profound and practical philosophy, which explores meaning, purpose, values and our struggle for authenticity.

Please contact me with any questions or to book an initial session. I also offer a free 20-minute initial phone consultation. My fees for in person sessions in Cambridge are £80 (sessions are 50 minutes). I can offer limited space for those who cannot afford the full fee. Please mention this when you get in touch.
